Closing Remarks

We are proud to honor this year's Chuck Newman Award recipient:

Kristin Booth Glen

Kristin Booth Glen, a graduate of Stanford University and Columbia Law School, was a trial and appellate judge in New York for 21 years, has taught at NYU, Hofstra and New York Law Schools, and served, for a decade, as Dean of the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law where she is now Dean Emerita. During her Deanship she was also a mediator for JAMS, and when she left to become Surrogate, New York County, she began a mediation pilot project in her court which has now been widely adopted by Surrogates across the state. Kris is the Founding Director of, and now Senior Advisor to, Supported Decision-Making New York (SDMNY), now in its seventh year, which advances the human right of everyone to make their own decisions, regardless of disability, by piloting the use of supported decision making to divert persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities at risk of guardianship, and to restore rights to persons currently subject to guardianship. SDMNY was instrumental in the passage of New York’s new Supported Decision-Making Agreement (SDMA) law, and is currently operating under a 3-year implementation grant from the NY Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) to develop a statewide facilitation service delivery system. Under Kris’s leadership SDMNY has partnered with the OCA Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution to train CDRC mediators to resolve conflicts arising out of SDMAs and is also exploring training them as supported decision-making facilitators Kris has served as Chair of the ABA Commission on Law and Aging, Commissioner on the ABA Commission on Disability Rights, Advisory Board member of the National Resource Center on Supported Decision-Making and the Brookdale Center on Aging, among many others, and writes and lectures widely. She is a proud Upper West-Sider, where she has lived for the past 60 years.

About the Chuck Newman Award

ACR-GNY’s Chuck Newman Award (formerly the Frontline Champion Award) recognizes individuals who have made a meaningful impact on the field of conflict resolution. Chuck Newman Award honorees are named and celebrated at each year's Mediation Settlement Day event.

In 2022, we lost a beacon of light in New York's conflict resolution community. Chuck Newman was a former ACR-GNY president and member of the Roundtable Breakfast organizing committee. Chuck spent over a decade supporting the growth of the conflict resolution field. Still, more than that, he was deeply invested in our conflict resolution community: the people who spend their time and emotional resources to explore peaceful resolutions. In recognition of Chuck and his legacy, ACR-GNY has named an award in his honor.
