Dr. Qian Wei will discuss the following questions:

  1. Is the Tocquevillian wisdom of "civic organizations functioning as a school of democracy" an aspiration or a reality?
  2. Has civic participation become thinner in the US?
  3. Does civic participation also contribute to the rise of authoritarianism?

The discussion will be moderated by ACR-GNY President-elect Nick Pozek.

Dr. Qian Wei is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada. Before joining Laurier, she worked as a postdoc fellow at PCAS (Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society) at Stanford University. Her research focuses on civil society, civic participation, democracy and deglobalization. She has published a book and multiple papers on NGOs in authoritarian China, nonprofit leaders’ power, and human rights in developing countries.
