Drawing in particular from Northern Ireland, Colombia and South Africa, this presentation will focus on the role of apologies as a means of addressing past harms in previously conflicted or authoritarian societies; how can apologies be deemed legitimate or otherwise, how they interact with other ways of addressing the past (including prosecutions, truth recovery and reparations) and what are the best ways to encourage those responsible for past abuses to engage is such processes.
Kieran McEvoy is the Senator George J. Mitchell Chair in Peace, Security and Justice at the Mitchell Institute and a Professor of Law and Transitional Justice at Queens University Belfast. He has conducted research in over a dozen post conflict or post authoritarian societies (including Colombia, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Israel/Palestine, Rwanda, Indonesia) and is longstanding peace and human rights activist in Northern Ireland. He has authored or co-authored four books, co-edited eight books or special issues and over seventy journal articles and scholarly book chapters. He was previously a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar for a year at Harvard Law School, a Global Law Fellow at NYU Law and has been a visiting professor at the School of Law Berkeley CA and Fordham Law School NY.
