Corporate Event Planning and Production in Dallas | Speaker conference ...

Should a neutral invest significant time in speaking, writing, CLE programs, and social media, or is that time better spent developing relationships directly with lawyers?  Which is more important and why?

What are your thoughts?

I personally think a bit of everything helps, However, I am in two Inns of Court, one for alternate dispute resolution and one for litigation, and I think that is a great way to network with both practitioners and Judges.

For nearly 30 years, the lion's share of my business development efforts have been presenting CLE programs, writing, and speaking at conferences. It is the best way to get in front of a lot of lawyers, and meet them after for Q&A. This is the foot in the door to showcase your expertise. Cold calling lawyers that you don't know yet is a waste of time.

Not being a lawyer, I don't have the common benefit of socializing with and learning from fellow arbitrators. Very infrequently, there are informative lectures hosted by local law firms. I wish AAA would encourage more firms to do this in addition to the more frequent, lengthy and paid events .

Raoul, the local and county and state bar association are great ways to connect with fellow arbitrators. Many of them have a category of membership for non-lawyers. Joining as an Affiliate so you can participate in their ADR Section meetings is an excellent way to connect. Additionally, they all are always looking for presenters for CLE programs...again, another great way to connect. The bar associations also all have some type of listserve, which can be very enlightening, and let you know who is active in that area.
